DE PERE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (1-2) ended up on the short end of a see-saw battle at St. Norbert (3-1) on Saturday night in a 58-54 loss to the Green Knights.
The Pointers were led in scoring by
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) and
Aaron Knez (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) with eight points apiece.
Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) had seven point with
Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran),
MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) and
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) contributing six points each.
UWSP shot 52.6 percent from the field and limited SNC to 50 percent shooting. The Pointers made seven three-pointers by five different players.
The Pointers hit three-consecutive three-pointers to open the game and take a 9-2 lead, their largest of the game. The Pointers went more than six minutes without a bucket as SNC went on a 9-0 run to take an 11-9 lead.
As the teams traded buckets down the stretch,
Brett Tauber (Madison, Wis./Memorial) scored the Pointers' final three points of the half with SNC taking a 27-24 edge into the break.
Delmore hit his first three of the season early in the second half to cut the deficit to two. Nelson hit a bucket to tie the game at 35-35 and
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) buried a three to put UWSP up by four at 14:04. After Dodge scored again at the 11:51 mark, UWSP went four minutes without a bucket as the Green Knights built a five-point advantage.
Bublitz ended the drought with his first points of the year. Knez cut the lead to two and later
Blake Ehrke (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) nailed a three to tie the game at 48-48. Bublitz gave the Pointers their final lead at 52-51 as SNC hit seven of eight free throws to salt away the game.
The Pointers return to action next Saturday (Dec. 2) to close out a three-game road swing at UW-Superior. Tip-off against the Yellowjackets is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
