STEVENS POINT, Wis.— Junior forward
Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK/) tallied a goal and a pair of assists to guide the No. 8/10 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to a 6-2 victory over Aurora in the Holiday Tournament sponsored by Ascension championship round Saturday evening at K.B. Willett Arena.
With just 11 seconds remaining in the first period, Karty netted what would prove to be the game-winning goal, off assists from
Willem Nong-Lambert (Des Moines, Iowa/) and
Ethan Strong (Kinmount, ON/) to put the Pointers (6-3-1) up 3-2 over Aurora (1-6-2) entering the second period.
In the second period, Karty returned the favor setting up Nong-Lambert for a goal of his own, extending the UWSP lead to 4-1 entering the final frame.
Midway through the third period, Karty tallied his second assist of the night, this time setting up
Colin Raver (Bartlett, IL) for his second goal of the season to put UWSP up 5-1.
At the 12:22 mark of the final period, Rudolfs Kalvitis scored for the Spartans to pull within three, before
Kelly O'Brien (Detroit, MI/) tallied a power-play goal to put the Pointers back up four goals.
Wesley Ashley (Pittsburgh, PA) got the Pointers on the board in the first period, going coast-to-coast to tally his first career goal and put the Pointers up, 1-0, 7:13 into the contest.
At 12:58 of the opening period,
Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, NJ/) netted a power-play goal putting UWSP up by a pair.
Rihard Mathias tallied for Aurora at the 19:32 mark to put the Spartans within striking distance of the lead, before Karty's game-winner 17 seconds later.
Freshman goaltender
Connor Ryckman (Minesing, ON) made 24 saves, one shy of his career best, to help guide the Pointers to the victory.
UWSP will return to action on Friday, Dec. 1, traveling to UW-River Falls. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Hunt Arena.
