STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (3-1) took a big first quarter lead and held a sizeable lead throughout in a 58-44 win over visiting Lakeland (2-1) on Tuesday.
Sophomore
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) led the Pointers with 11 points off the bench. Seniors
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) and
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) added nine points apiece.
Fellow senior
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) grabbed 10 rebounds to lead all players. She contributed six points and had three assists.
Cerrato broke a 7-7 tie with a three-pointer sparking the UWSP to a 14-0 run to end the first quarter. Mickey and
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) added buckets in the run as Lakeland missed its final five shots of the quarter and had three turnovers.
Two minutes into the second quarter, the Muskies ended the drought, but
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) quickly answered with a three. Barrett and
Ashley Leiterman (Morrison, Wis./Denmark) scored the next five UWSP points as the Pointers took a 33-15 lead in the half.
UWSP began the third quarter with a 7-0 run to push the lead to 25 points.
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) and
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) posted baskets down the stretch as UWSP headed to the fourth with a 19-point advantage.
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and
Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) scored buckets in the fourth quarter as the Pointers cruised to the 14-point win.
UWSP returns to action next Wednesday (Nov. 29) with a 7:00 p.m. game at Carthage. The Pointers return home for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off on Friday, Dec. 1 against St. Thomas.
