DUBUQUE, Iowa – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (2-1) saw its unblemished start come to an end with an 81-70 defeat at Loras (2-0) on Saturday.
Senior
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) led the Pointers with 13 points with six rebounds. Twin sister
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) led UWSP with seven boards. She added nine points.
Sophomore
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) scored in double figures for the third time this season with 12 points, going 9-for-10 at the free throw line. Senior
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) was also in double figures with 11 points.
Two minutes into the game,
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) hit a three to give UWSP a 5-1 lead, the biggest of the game for the Pointers. The Duhawks leveraged a 14-3 run into a lead they would not relinquish. Cerrato hit a three late to pull UWSP within 19-16 after one quarter.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) hit a three six minutes into the second quarter to end a drought from the field and snap a 12-4 spurt by Loras. Freshman
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) hit from the field a little over a minute later, but UWSP was limited to just 12 points in the quarter, seven of which came at the free throw line.
Freshmen
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) and
Ashley Leiterman (Morrison, Wis./Denmark) scored on consecutive possessions to begin the second half as the Pointers tried to erase the 13-point halftime deficit. Loras hit five three pointers in the quarter to extend the lead to 19 at one point.
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) scored a basket as UWSP went on a 10-2 run late in the quarter.
Schmidt and Leiterman scored early in the fourth to cut the deficit to single digits, but a four-minute drought from the floor let the Duhawks build the lead back to 15. Greenheck and
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) scored late but the deficit was too much to overcome.
The Pointers return home on Tuesday (Nov. 21) to face Lakeland. Tip-off at Berg Gym is set for 7:00 p.m. and the Pointers will hold their annual food drive to benefit The Cupboard.
