Second Period Flurry Nets Women’s Hockey Tie with St. Olaf

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (0-1-1) netted two power-play goals and earned a 4-4 tie with St. Olaf (1-0-1) on Saturday afternoon.

The Oles opened the scoring with a power-play goal late in the opening period.

UWSP opened the second period on the power play and senior Ali Biagini (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater) netted the first goal of the season for the Pointers just 34 second into the frame.

Just 26 seconds later, the Oles regained the lead.  Midway through the period, a turnover near the UWSP blue line led to a breakaway by St. Olaf giving the Oles a two-goal lead.

Junior Mackenzie Kratch (Waconia, MN/Waconia) notched the second power-play goal of the period at the 13:44 mark sparking an offensive outburst.

Less than a minute later, senior Ellie Punnett (Hailey, ID/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) netted her first of the year to tie the game at 3-3.  The onslaught continued 36 seconds later as Alex Grubbs (Minong, WI/Spooner) scored to put the Pointers in front.

The lead held until late in the third period.  St. Olaf struck on a power play to knot the score at 4-4.

In overtime, the Pointers dominated play with nine of the 10 shots, but were not able to score the game-winner.

Sophomore Marit Larson (Oakdale, MN/North St. Paul) played all 65 minutes in net for UWSP.  She made 22 saves.  St. Olaf keeper Kaitlyn Pellici turned aside 48 shots.

The Pointers wrap up a season-opening three-game home stand on Tuesday with a 7:00 p.m. match up against St. Norbert.
