STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Freshman
Jahi Stigall (Chicago, Ill./DePaul College Prep) ran a kick back 92 yards for the lone score as the UW-Stevens Point football team (4-4, 1-4) fell to visiting UW-Whitewater (5-3, 4-1) on Saturday, 35-7.
Stigall's return was the sixth-longest in program history and the longest kickoff return for a touchdown by a Pointer since 2002.
UWSP's offense was held to just 221 yards of total offense on the day. Freshman running back
ShamaJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Lutheran) led UWSP with 66 yards on 14 carries.
Senior
Jerry Williams (Milwaukee, Wis./Watertown) caught six passes for 56 yards. He caught three passes from each UWSP quarterback. Mitchell Neubauer completed 8-of-13 passes for 79 yards and
Matt Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) completed four passes for 41 yards.
Defensively, the Pointers had a season-high three sacks.
Griffen Davis (Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge) and
Omarri Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside) led the team with seven tackles each.
The Warhawks drove 71 yards on eight plays on the opening drive to put UWSP behind early. On the ensuing drive, the Pointers drove into UWW territory before the Warhawks picked off Urmanski to end the march.
UWW took the ball 85 yards over 14 plays to take a 14-0 lead into the second quarter. On their second drive of the second quarter, the Warhawks upped the lead to 21-0.
On the ensuing kickoff, Stigall raced 92 yards to the house to get UWSP on the board. The momentum was short-lived as UWW needed just four plays to put another touchdown on the board.
The Warhawks added another score in the first possession of the second half, driving 80 yards on 16 plays to chew up a major chunk of the clock in the third quarter.
Midway through the fourth quarter, the Pointers offense strung together a solid drive. Neubauer completed four-of-five on the drive. UWSP got to the UWW two-yard line facing a fourth-and-goal, but were stopped short of the goal line.
The Pointers conclude the home slate next Saturday, Senior Day, with a 2:00 p.m. kick off versus UW-River Falls.
