STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team (0-1-0) was held off the scoreboard in a season-opening 1-0 loss to visiting St. Olaf (1-0-0) at Ice Hawks Arena on Friday.
The Oles' Mary Kate Eiden netted a power-play tally in the second period to account for all the scoring.
Junior
Ali Biagini (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater) drew a penalty with just 1:04 remaining in the contest. The officials awarded a penalty shot, but Biagini's shot was saved.
The Pointers out-shot St. Olaf in the game, 34-24. Junior defender
Mackenzie Kratch (Waconia, MN/Waconia) led UWSP with seven shots. Senior
Ellie Punnett (Hailey, ID/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) and junior
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Madison Capitols) added five shots apiece.
UWSP was called for six penalties in the game and were not able to score on two power-play opportunities.
Junior goaltender
Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, MN/South St. Paul) made 23 saves in the defeat. St. Olaf's Sam Klemann saved all 34 shots to record the shutout.
The Pointers and Oles face off again on Saturday at Ice Hawks Arena. The puck drops at 2:30 p.m.
