MENOMONIE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (4-3, 1-3) was held to just three points in the second half in a 23-17 loss at UW-Stout (4-2, 2-2) on Saturday. It marked the fifth-straight meeting between the Pointers and Blue Devils to be decided by seven or fewer points.
Sophomore quarterback
Matt Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) completed 13 of his 25 pass attempts for 163 yards. He threw for two touchdowns, both to
Steve Herra (Rockford, Ill./Boylan). Mitchell Neubauer completed four passes for 73 yards.
Herra caught a pair of touchdowns among his eight receptions. He racked up 109 receiving yards.
Jerry Williams (Milwaukee, Wis./Watertown) caught six passes for 104 yards.
Freshman
ShamaJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Lutheran) carried the ball 14 times for 51 yards.
Evan Dux (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) gained 41 yards on six carries for UWSP.
Senior
Tanner Beaman (Phelps, Wis./Northland Pines) was one of four Pointers with six tackles in the game. He had a team-high two tackles for loss on the day.
After the Blue Devils posted a field goal, the Pointers offense started to move. Williams gained 14 yards on four plays to put the Pointers near midfield. Urmanski completed all four passes on the drive including a 22-yarder to Herra to give UWSP a 7-3 lead.
On the next UWSP possession, a tipped pass was intercepted by UW-Stout and returned for a touchdown for a 10-7 Blue Devils lead. UW-Stout added a field goal on the first drive of the second quarter to make it 13-7.
Dux chewed up 33 yards on four carries on the ensuing drive. Urmanski completed three passes, including back-to-back connections with Herra for a go-ahead touchdown.
The Blue Devils would kick another field goal and take a 16-14 lead into halftime. UW-Stout scored a touchdown late in the third quarter to put UWSP behind 23-14.
Omarri Johnson (Milwaukee, Wis./Riverside) incepted a pass on the UWSP eight-yard line to stop another UW-Stout drive in the fourth quarter. Neubauer entered under center on the ensuing drive and moved the Pointers to the Blue Devils' 12-yard line.
Matt Taborn (Matteson, Ill./Marian Catholic) converted the field goal to pull UWSP within six, but the Pointers couldn't muster any more offense in the loss.
The Pointers play UW-Whitewater next Saturday (Oct. 28) at 1:00 p.m. in the first of back-to-back home games.
