Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Pointers and Pipers Skate to a 4-4 Tie

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team moved to a 4-4 tie with Hamline University this Saturday afternoon in St. Cloud, Minn.

In last night's game against Saint Benedict the Pointers went 2-for-5 in power plays, and today's game proved similar in going 3-for-5 during the person advantage. With the tie, the Pointers move to 6-4-1, while the Pipers move to 6-4-2.

Early in the first period after a Piper hooking penalty, Logan Harper (Gurnee, IL/Warren Township), assisted by Lexi Englund (White Bear Lake, MN/White Bear Lake) and Alex Grubbs (Minong, WI/Spooner) took an early 1-0 lead during the Pointer power play at 3:03. The score was evened out when Piper's Bre Simon scooted the puck past Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, MN/South St. Paul) half way through the first period. Less than two minutes later, Pointers freshman, Emma Paravola (Oswego, IL/Oswego) scored her first collegiate goal, breaking the 1-1 tie at 11:13.

The Pipers tied the game once again at the 12:29 minute mark of the second period, but the Pointers regained a 3-2 lead at 19:15. The Pipers committed a tripping penalty that led to a Meredith Ingbretson (Hayward, WI/Hayward) power play goal.

In the third period, the Pointers gave up an early goal just nine seconds into the period, tying the game three all. Midway through the period, Hamlin took the outright lead as Emily Gunderson, assisted by Jaci Reinke found the back of the net at 9:27.

The Pointers third and final power play goal came from Englund with just three minutes left in regulation. The Pointers challenged Pipers goal tender Jaimie Hathaway three times for a game-winning goal, but denied all three times.

Defensively, the Pointers didn't allow a shot in overtime, whereas the team got six shots off in the final minutes of the game, but came up empty ending the game in a 4-4 tie.

UWSP has a short turn around as they come back to Minnesota on Jan. 11 against the University of St. Thomas. This game is one-of-two games that were postponed on December 17-18. The Pointers and Tommies are set to face off at 7 p.m. at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.
