Balanced Pointers Crush Tommies 6-1

ST. PAUL, Minn. – A dominant first period and a balanced attack led the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team to a 6-1 win over the University of St. Thomas on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

Five different Pointers (7-4-2) lit the lamp in Wednesday's dominant win over the Tommies (3-6-2). Senior Meredith Ingbretson (Hayward, WI/Hayward), juniors Lexi Englund (White Bear Lake, MN/White Bear Lake) and Lauren Smith (Antigo, WI/Antigo), and sophomores Mackenzie Kratch (Waconia, MN/Waconia) and Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Craig) each scored for the Pointers

Three Pointers' goals came in the first period despite being outshot by the Tommies 6-11 in the stanza.

Hot shooting Englund, who scored once with two assists in last Saturday's win over Saint Benedict, opened the first period with a Pointers' goal at 3:54. Both Kratch and Ingbretson got in on the action, adding two goals of their own at 13:23 and 19:39 ending the period with a 3-0 lead.

UWSP tacked on another goal early in the second period as Lemirande found the back of the net with her team leading eighth goal of the season. At 7:18, Anna Williams denied a Pointers' shutout by scoring midway through the period, but the Tommies still found themselves down by three goals.

The Pointers continued their offensive prowess as Smith accounted for both goals in the third period. Smith's goals at 7:02 and 10:20 were on the power play.

Marit Larson (Oakdale, MN/North St. Paul) picked up the win stopping 31-of-32 shots.

UWSP has a quick turnaround as the Pointers have a split weekend against St. Norbert College starting Friday, Jan. 13 hosting the Knights at 7 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
