ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Returning to the ice in the second half of the season, the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team defeated the College of Saint Benedict 3-1 this evening.
Sophomore
Maddie Schlossmacher (Roseville, MN/Roseville) scored her second goal of the season early in the first period, and the Pointers (6-4-1) solidified the win with two goals in the second period for a 3-1 victory over the Blazers (3-8-0).
At 5:25 in the first period, Schlossmacher, assisted by
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Craig) and
Ellie Punnett (Hailey, ID/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) put the Pointers up 1-0 with an early power play goal. Pointers goal tender,
Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, MN/South St. Paul) faced seven shots in the first period and stopped all seven.
In the second period, the Blazers tied it up 1-1 scoring at the 3:36 minute mark. The Pointers took full advantage of their power play opportunities (2-for-5), and scored at 12:57 to regain a 2-1 lead.
Lauren Smith (Antigo, WI/Antigo), assisted by
Alex Grubbs (Minong, WI/Spooner) and
Meredith Ingbretson (Hayward, WI/Hayward), marked her second goal of the season as well.
Less than four minutes later, Grubbs, assisted by
Maddie Monroe (Aurora, IL/Batavia ) and
Lexi Englund (White Bear Lake, MN/White Bear Lake), scored at 16:08 of the second period.
Conley and the Pointers' defense remained a wall as the Blazers got off eight shots in the third period, but kept the Blazers scoreless. Conley earned the victory stopping 20-of-21 shots faced.
The Pointers remain in St. Cloud, Minn. as they face the Hamline Pipers at 12 p.m., Sat., January 7.
