RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team used a 24-4 run over the final 11:18 of the first half to blow open an eventual 67-46 win at UW-River Falls on Saturday.
Senior
Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) led all scorers with 17 points. Fellow Pointers
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, WI/Monroe) and
Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) also contributed double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Sophomore
Katy Heine (Jefferson, WI/Jefferson) tied a career-high with nine points for UWSP (13-6, 5-3).
The host Falcons (6-13, 1-7) hit two of their first three shots to take a 4-2 lead. Seconds later, Hennes buried a three to spark a 10-0 run capped by a
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) three. UWRF then went on an eight-point run to tie the game at 12-12.
Hennes snapped the mini-drought and Douglas hit from behind the arc to close the quarter. Douglas hit another three to open the second quarter to extend the lead back to eight. After a UWRF basket at the 8:44 mark, the Pointers' defense clamped down and allowed just a pair of free throws as the lead ballooned to 20 at the half.
The Falcons cut the lead to 13 as Hennes accounted for the first four points of the half for UWSP over the first four-and-a-half minutes of the third quarter. In the waning minutes of the third, Anklam hit another three and Barrett converted an and-one with Heine adding a bucket the cap the quarter.
Heine extended her personal scoring streak to nine points over the first three-plus minutes of the fourth quarter.
Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) and Barret hit buckets down the stretch as UWSP converted all four free throws to hold the big lead.
The Pointers have back-to-back home games next week. UWSP hosts UW-Oshkosh for Pack It Purple Night on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The first 250 fans receiving a free t-shirt and fans will have a chance to win $500 at halftime. The annual Play4Kay game is next Saturday (Feb. 4) against UW-Eau Claire at 3:00 p.m., where fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of the cause and donations will be taken to support the Hope is Building Campaign.
