STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (13-7, 5-4) put forth a valiant effort in a fourth-quarter comeback attempt, but No. 16 UW-Oshkosh (18-2, 8-1) prevailed with a 60-55 win at Berg Gym on Wednesday night.
Juniors
Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) and
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, WI/Monroe) scored in double figures for UWSP. Douglas had a game-high 15 points with Barrett right behind with 12 points. Senior
Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) and junior
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) each pulled down eight boards to lead the Pointers.
Douglas scored the first six UWSP points and Hennes drilled a three to put the Pointers ahead 9-4 early. Following a Titans' five-point spurt to tie the game,
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) put UWSP ahead with a last minute layup.
With 3:33 remaining in the first half, senior
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) hit a three to put the Pointers ahead, 21-18. Then in the closing seconds of the half,
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, WI/De Pere) hit from behind the arc to give UWSP a 24-22 halftime edge.
UW-Oshkosh opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run to turn the tide squarely in favor of the visitors. Douglas ended the run with an and-one and five-straight points for UWSP, but the Titans' hot shooting propelled UWO to an eight-point lead. Later in the quarter, Barrett and Roland scored on back-to-back offensive trips, but the Pointers trailed by eight heading to the fourth.
Hennes scored four-straight points midway through the fourth and Cerrato hit both free throws to pull UWSP within one with 4:25 to go. Barrett had a four-point run to keep the Pointers close late, but the Titans hit six-of-eight free throw attempts in the final minute to spurn the Pointers' comeback attempt.
UWSP hosts UW-Eau Claire on Saturday (Feb. 4) at 3:00 p.m. The game versus the Blugolds is the annual Play4Kay game and fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of the cause.
