STEVENS POINT, Wis. - A well balanced UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team defeated visiting WIAC Conference foe UW-Eau Claire, 2-1, this Friday evening at Ice Hawks.
The Pointers (11-7-2, 3-3-0 WIAC) played well on both ends of the ice scoring a goal each in the first two periods, while remaining disciplined defensively to defeat the Blugolds (14-6-1, 3-2-0 WIAC), 2-1. The Pointers committed just two penalties, while goal tender
Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, MN/South St. Paul) picked up her seventh win of the season having stopped 22-of-23 shots.
Blugolds' Erin Goodell put UWEC on top first, scoring halfway through the first period at 10:54. Pointers freshman,
Allison Karrmann (Cannon Falls, MN/Emerson Prep) scored her first collegiate goal at 15:08 to tie the game at ones. Both goalies were tested early and often in the first period as Blugolds' Conolly saw 13 shots, while Conley saw nine.
With the second period winding down, Pointers' Ellie Punnett wrapped around the Blugolds' net and passed back towards the middle to find an open
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Craig) to give the Pointers the outright 2-1 lead at the 16:15 minute mark. Lemirande tallied her team leading 14th goal, while Punnett added two assists on the evening for a total of 15 assists on the year and 18 total points for the Pointers.
The hard fought battle between the two teams continued into the third period, but UWSP remained disciplined. UWEC pulled Conolly in the final two minutes of regulation for the person advantage, but the Pointers outlasted the Blugolds to hang on for the win.
The Pointers have a week off until the two teams resume the three-game series on Friday, Feb. 3. The Pointers and Blugolds are set to face off at 7 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
