Men's Hockey Downs UW-Eau Claire 3-2

STEVENS POINT, Wis.- Senior forward Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) tallied a short-handed goal in the third period to guide the fourth-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over No. 6/8 UW-Eau Claire Friday evening at K.B. Willett Arena, as part of the teams eigth annual Put a Check to Cancer game.

At the 7:14 mark of the third period, Barber tallied his 13th goal of the season, to put UW-Stevens Point (13-3-3, 3-0-0 WIAC) up 3-1 over UW-Eau Claire (13-4-3, 3-1-0 WIAC).

With just under four minutes to go in the final period, Adam Knochenmus scored a short-handed goal to pull UWEC within one. UWSP was able to hold off the Blugolds for the final 20 seconds with the extra attacker.

Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) got the Pointers out to an early 1-0 lead, putting home Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas)'s rebound just 3:42 into the opening frame.

Midway through the second period, freshman forward Austin Kelly (Toledo, OH) scored to give UWSP a two-goal advantage.

With 6:00 remaining in the middle period, Jake Hopfner scored a power-play goal for UWEC to cut the lead to one, before Barber's goal to open the third.

UW-Stevens Point out-shot UW-Eau Claire, 24-21. Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) made 19 saves in the victory for UWSP, while Jay Deo made 21 for UWEC.

The Pointers return to action tomorrow evening travelling to UW-River Falls for a 7:05 puck drop at Hunt Arena.
