STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior
Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) had a career-high 12 rebounds and recorded her first career double-double, but visiting UW-Platteville spoiled her night with a 67-63 win on Wednesday to snap UW-Stevens Point's six game home win streak. Hennes scored 14 points and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the line to go along with her dozen boards.
Fellow senior
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) led all players with a game-high 16 points. Junior
Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) also scored in double figures contributing 10 points. Twin sister
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) grabbed 11 rebounds for UWSP (11-5, 3-2). Fellow junior
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, WI/Monroe) blocked a career-best five shots in the game.
Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) hit a three-pointers nearly four minutes into the game to end an 8-2 run by the Pioneers (6-10, 2-3) to open the game. Two minutes later, Roland scored again as the Pointers took their first lead of the game at 11-10. In the final minute of the quarter, Roland nailed her second from behind the arc as UWSP trailed by just two after the first quarter.
Just past the midpoint of the second quarter, Anklam buried back-to-back triples. Then with 2:55 remaining in the half, Hennes broke a 32-32 tie and neither team scored the rest of the half.
Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) scored from behind the arc in the opening minute of the third quarter to maintain the two-point edge. Back-to-back baskets by Hennes answered scores by the Pioneers and a three by Anklam at the 6:51 mark gave UWSP its largest lead of the game. Both teams struggled from the field until a three at the buzzer by UW-Platteville sent the game to the fourth quarter tied, 49-49.
Barrett hit a basket in the opening minute of the fourth, but the Pioneers used a 12-4 run to open up an eight-point lead over the Pointers. Anklam hit a three to end the run, but UWSP missed its next six shots from the field until a Douglas hoop cut the deficit to five in the final two minutes. Douglas nailed a three with 36 seconds remaining to make it a one-possession game, but the Pointers were not able to convert on the final five shots from the field.
The Pointers head to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. matchup with the Blugolds. UWSP returns home on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. tilt with UW-Whitewater to close the first half of the conference slate.
