Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cold Second Quarter Dooms Pointers in Road Loss

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (11-6, 3-3) shot just 28 percent from the field and scored just three free throws in the second quarter in a 56-48 loss at UW-Eau Claire on Saturday.

Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) led the Pointers in scoring with 12 points.  Junior Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) added 11 points.  Senior Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) grabbed nine boards.

Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) and Hennes combined to score the first six points of the game giving UWSP a 6-0 lead.  Later in the first quarter, Anklam scored five-straight points to give the Pointers an eight-point lead, the largest of the game.  Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) rounded out the scoring in the first quarter as UWSP was up 17-15 after one.

Mix hit the second free throw just under three minutes into the second quarter, the first points by either team in the period.   With 2:14 left in the half, Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) hit both free throws and despite making no shots from the field, UWSP only trailed by five at the half.

Anklam ended the cold spell from the field a minute-and-a-half into the third quarter.  Five minutes later, Hennes hit a bucket ending another drought.  Katy Heine (Jefferson, WI/Jefferson) hit a pair of baskets later in the quarter, but the Pointers trailed by nine heading to the fourth.

Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) and Anklam hit three threes early in the fourth to cut the deficit to four.  After that, the Blugolds put up a 9-2 run and got no closer than eight the rest of the way.

UWSP returns home to face UW-Whitewater on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. to wrap the first half of conference play.
