STEVENS POINT, Wis. – A 19-2 run to open the third quarter broke open a two-point halftime lead and the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (11-4, 3-1) remained unbeaten at home with a 64-48 win over visiting UW-River Falls (5-10, 0-4) on Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) led all players in scoring with 18 points. Fellow senior
Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) poured in 15 and junior
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, WI/Monroe) added 10 points. Another senior,
Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) grabbed a team-high six rebounds and scored eight points.
Baskets by Douglas and Barrett quickly erased a four-point deficit to begin the game and a three by Anklam gave the Pointers their first lead three-and-a-half minutes in. UWSP went dry from the field for the next six minutes and trailed, 15-11, after the first period.
The Falcons held the lead for the majority of the second quarter until a three-pointer by
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, WI/De Pere) with 2:16 remaining in the half knotted the game at 24-24. After the teams traded baskets, a pair of free throws in the final seconds by Anklam gave UWSP a two-point edge at the break.
Douglas buried a three in the opening minute of the third quarter and the Pointers went on a 19-2 run over the first eight-and-a-half minutes. Anklam and Hennes each scored five points during the run.
Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) scored at the 7:19 mark of the fourth quarter to snap a three-minute drought by the Pointers. The UWSP defense put a halt to any notion of a comeback as the Falcons scored just twice in the final four minutes of the game.
The Pointers return to Berg Gym on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. against UW-Platteville.
