Track and Field Opens Season with Pointer Alumni and Quad Meet

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's and women's track and field teams opened their 2017 campaign by hosting the Pointer Alumni and Quad Meet at the Multi-Activity Center on Saturday. 

Results

Tatiana Sotka (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca) took a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.33.  Kiana Thompson (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) came in fourth at 8.56 seconds. 

Jacklyn Butler (Oshkosh, WI/West) earned a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.79 with fellow Pointer Sylviann Momont (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale) just .02 seconds behind with a time of 27.81.  Butler later on went to win the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.50 with Momont taking second with just .11 seconds difference between the two. 

Hannah Mertens (West Bend, WI/Hartford Union) won the 300-meter dash with a time of 41.46 and fellow Pointer Abigail Clement followed with a time of 43.28. 

In the 600-meter run Sarah Vils (Mosinee, WI/Mosinee), Kathy Derks (Greenville, WI/Hortonville), and Leah Trempe (Combined Locks, WI/Kimberly) ran for the top three spots with times of 1:39.07, 1:39.30, and 1:41.71. 

Another trio of runners dominated in the one-mile run. Kara Koier, Samantha Bemke (Edgar, WI/Edgar) and Bailey Boudreau (Wausau, WI/East) took the top three spots, respectively, with times just under six minutes.

In the 4x400-meter relay, the team of Alexia Beecher (Black Creek, WI/Shiocton), Briana Simonis (Rosholt, Wis./Rosholt), Sylviann Momont (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale) and Lindsay Born (Appleton, WI/North) finished in second place.  The team ran 4:26.19, just .08 seconds behind St. Benedict for first. 

In the field events, Isabella Weekley won the high jump with a distance of 1.66 meters.  Simonis came in second at 1.55 meters. 

In the pole vault, Angela Breunig (Watertown, WI/Watertown) placed second clearing a height of 3.40 meters.  Breunig was just shy of first place with .15 meters. 

Lydia Ulrich (Lake Mills, Wis./Lakeside Lutheran) came in second in the long jump at 5.01 meters.  Fellow teammate, Amber Bianco (Rosholt, Wis./Rosholt) finished third with a jump of 4.94 meters. 

In the women's shot put, Karen Wethal (Evansville, WI/Evansville) and Jordan Tyjeski (Beaver Dam, WI/Beaver Dam) came in first and second, respectively.  The pair threw distances of 12.70 and 11.59 meters.  Tyjeski and Wethal took second and third in the weight throw with 15.33 and 13.80 meters.  The pair was edged out by a Pointer alumnus. 

In the finals of the men's 60-meter dash, Tanner Akers (Westfield, WI/Westfield) came in fourth with a time of 7.33.  Akers was milliseconds from former Pointer and national qualifier Jordan Richards (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH).  Akers also went on to a second place finish in the triple jump at 12.18 meters.    

Takuto Kobayashki came in first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.20.  Kobayashki later won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.65 with Sheldon Harn (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) earning second place with 8.88. 

Calden Wojt (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) and Jayden Jesse (Genoa City, Wis./Wilmot) placed first and second in the 300-meter dash respectively.  The pair ran times of 35.83 and 36.06 seconds. 

Sam Welch (Manawa, Wis./Manawa) earned a first place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time 56.56. 

In the 800-meter run, Alex Egbert (La Crosse, WI/Aquinas) and Matt Stelmasek (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) earned second- and fourth-place finishes with times of 1:59.42 and 2:00.95. 

In the mile run, Alex Richardson (Hales Corner, WI/Whitnall) and Lukas Johnston finished in first and second, respectively.  The pair finished with 4:29.38 and 4:33.85, respectively. 

Sophomore distance runners, Eric Zengler (Wausau, WI/West) and Max Zeitler (Gillett, WI/Gillett) came in first and third, respectively, in the 3,000-meter run.  The pair finished with times of 9:18.73 and 9:22.47. 

Following his win in the 400-meter dash, Sam Welch (Manawa, Wis./Manawa) also contributed to one of two Pointer teams in the 4x400 meter relay, with his teammates Connor Haag (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas), Se'Kon Stephens (Milwaukee, WI/Menomonee Falls) and Chris Geurts (Stanford, IL/Olympia), the group finished third with a time of 3:43.79.  The group of Jeremy Lee (Viroqua, WI/Viroqua), Matthew Miller (Hillsboro, WI/Kickapoo), Lucas Lee (Merrill, WI/Merrill), and Alex Poncelet (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) finished in second with a time of 3:39. 

In the high jump, Christian Ferguson (Milwaukee, Wis./SCTE) and Jerry Williams (Watertown, WI/Watertown) finished in first and third, respectively.  The pair jumped distances of 2.06 and 1.78 meters.  Williams was .1 meters away from a second-place finish. 

In the pole vault, there was a three-way tie for second place between Alex Jochman (Kaukauna, Wis./Kaukauna), Jeremy Lee (Viroqua, WI/Viroqua) and Justin Hemshrot, who all finished at a height of 4.38 meters.  The trio was .37 meters away from former Badger Jesse Johnson's first-place finish with 4.75 meters. 

In the shot put, Brent Reierson (Watertown, WI/Watertown) and Kyle Nowak (Stratford, WI/Stratford) finished in first and third, respectively.  The pair finished with distances of 14.55 and 14.25 meters. 

Logan Heil (Weston, WI/DC Everest) and Reierson went first and second in the weight throw.  The pair finished with 18.09 and 16.79 meters.  Nowak finished fifth with 13.80 meters.    

The Pointers return to the Multi-Activity Center to host the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Triangular on Saturday, January 21.  The meet is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
