Three-Goal Third Gives Men's Hockey 5-2 Victory Over Augsburg

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The second-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team used a three-goal third period to defeat No. 12 Augsburg, 5-2, on Saturday evening at K.B. Willett Arena.

With UW-Stevens Point (12-3-3) holding a 2-1 lead over Augsburg (10-3-3) in the third period, senior forward Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) tallied what would turn out to be the game-winning goal at the 14:12 mark off an assists by Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) and Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem), who tallied his 100th career point in the victory.

At the 17:38 mark of the final period , Augsburg Evan Hesse scored to put the Auggies back within one off an assist by Jason Krych.

Just 1:08 later, it was Cornellier who found the back of the net to regain two-goal advantage for the Pointers, before Sharkey's empty-net goal with eight seconds remaining in regulation to secure the UWSP victory.

Augsburg's Luke Dietsch opened the game scoring 1:34 into the opening frame which would stand going into the middle period.

Midway through the second, senior forward Jono Davis (La Verne, CA) got the Pointers on the scoreboard off an assist by Sharkey, evening the game at 1-1.

With less than a minute to go in the second, Ethan Strong (Kinmount, ON) found the back of the net, to give UWSP the lead entering the final period.

UWSP outshot the Auggies, 48-26. Junior goaltender Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) made 24 saves for UWSP while Jordan Kaufer made 43 for Augsburg.

The Pointers will return to WIAC play taking on UW-Eau Claire on Friday Jan. 20 at K.B. Willett Arena, before traveling to UW-River Falls on Saturday. Both games are scheduled for 7:00 p.m. starts.

Friday night's contest will feature the team's annual Put a Check to Cancer game, where the team will wear limited edition jerseys which will be auctioned off via the Dash Digital Auction app. All proceeds will benefit the St. Michael's foundation.
