Men's Hockey Falls 4-2 to Saint Mary's

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) tallied a goal in the third period to cut the Saint Mary's lead to one, but couldn't start the comeback, as the second-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team fell 4-2 Friday evening at K.B. Willett Arena.

Midway through the third period, UWSP (11-3-3) senior forward Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) found the back of the net off assists by Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) and Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, NJ) to cut the Saint Mary's (9-5-2) to one. 

With under a minute remaining in regulation Martin Gruse scored an empty net goal to put Saint Mary's up 4-2.

At the 1:31 of the first period, Chad Cesarz scored a power-play goal to give Saint Mary's an early 1-0 edge.

With UWSP on the power play, freshman forward Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, NJ) tallied his first collegiate goal off assists by Willem Nong-Lambert (Des Moines, Iowa ) and Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK) to even the game at one heading into the second period.

In the second period, the Cardinals tallied back-to-back goals in the span of 1:23 by Gruse and Cesarz to give the Cardinals a two-goal advantage entering the final period.


UWSP outshot Saint Mary's, 40-31. Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) made 27 saves for UWSP, while Phil Heinle made 38 for Saint Mary's.

UWSP will round out its three-game week tomorrow evening, taking on No. 12 Augsburg at K.B. Willett Arena for a 7:00 p.m. start. Fans are encouraged to wear black for the teams annual Black Out game. Fans will also have the opportunity to win a big screen TV courtesy of Scaffidi Motors in Stevens Point.
