Pointers Notch Pair of Sweeps to End Week

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (14-1) cruised to a pair of wins on Saturday to close out play at the UW-Eau Claire Tournament.  The Pointers swept Concordia College (3-6) by 25-12, 25-14 and 25-7 set wins in morning action.  UWSP returned to the court this afternoon and dispatched of Dominican (2-8) in straight sets, 25-9, 25-14 and 25-12.
 
The Pointers featured a balanced attack on Saturday with seniors Kelly Cefalu (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) and Gabby Thomas (Henderson, MN/LeSueur-Henderson) along with freshman April Gehl (Hilbert, WI/Hilbert) recording double digit kills.  In the opening match, Cefalu and Thomas had 13 and 12 kills, respectively.  Against DU, Thomas and Gehl led the way with 13 and 10, respectively.
 
Senior Bri Piepenbrok (Merrill, WI/Merrill) was the lone player in either match with double digit digs.  She pocketed 16 in the match against the Cobbers and totaled 18 versus the Stars.  Freshman Abby Majercik (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) provided 39 and 29 assists in today's matches.

Cefalu and Thomas tagged up for four-straight kills as the Pointers erased an early deficit and moved to a 5-3 lead.  Later in the set, Gehl and junior Ellen Drewry (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) each recorded a pair of kills in a 6-0 run. 
 
Majercik closed out a late 4-0 run in set two with back-to-back service aces.  Cefalu added an ace in a 5-0 run as UWSP upped the score to 24-13.
 
Cefalu racked up three early kills in the third set as the Pointers jumped out to a 6-0 lead.  Thomas and freshman Rachel Hein (Muskego, WI/Muskego) each picked up three kills as UWSP scored 12-straight points to make the third set score 19-1.
 
UWSP 3, DU 0
The Pointers held the Stars without a kill in the opening set.  Offensively, UWSP had three different runs of four or more points while hitting .360.  Gehl and Drewry combined for seven of UWSP's 12 kills in the opening set.
 
Piepenbrok closed out a 6-0 run in set two to give UWSP a 13-7 lead.  Later in the set, another 6-0 run by the Pointers was capped by a Majerick ace.  Thomas and Gehl each had a kill in a set-closing 3-0 run.
 
Thomas and Cefalu combined for four kills in a 7-0 run in set three to put UWSP ahead 8-2.  Thomas and Gehl tallied five kills combined to open a 15-5 mid-set lead.  Cefalu closed out the match with kills on three of the final four UWSP points.
 
The Pointers return home for a six-match home stand beginning this the WIAC opener on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. versus UW-Platteville.  UWSP with host the CCIW/WIAC Crossover next weekend with a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday at Berg Gym.  The home stand concludes on Sept. 28 against UW-Whitewater.
