STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The No. 11 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (15-1) had little trouble in the opening match of WIAC play with a 3-0 sweep of visiting UW-Platteville (4-9) on Wednesday evening.
Senior
Kelly Cefalu (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) led all players with 14 kills on the night. Fellow senior
Bri Piepenbrok (Merrill, WI/Merrill) racked up 21 digs in the three-set win. Freshman
Abby Majercik (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg) continued a solid first campaign contributing 34 assists.
An early 4-0 run initiated by back-to-back kills by
Rachel Hein (Muskego, WI/Muskego) turned the tide in the Pointers' favor. Mid set, it was junior
Ellen Drewry (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) with consecutive kills in a 6-0 run. Later in the set, senior
Marie Krengel (Eagan, MN/Eastview) added a pair of kills included the set point.
Majercik served up a pair of aces in set two as another 6-0 run put UWSP in front 7-3. A back-and-forth set was finished off with a Cefalu kill.
Cefalu took matters into her own hands to open set three, providing three kills in the first five UWSP points. Three more mid-set kills by Cefalu put the Pointers in front 22-10. Senior
Gabby Thomas (Henderson, MN/LeSueur-Henderson) powered two late kills to seal the match.
UWSP will host the CCIW/WIAC Crossover this weekend with matches at Berg Gym and Quandt Fieldhouse on Friday and Saturday. The Pointers will face North Park at 4:30 p.m. on Friday before a matchup of top-25 squads takes place at Berg. At 7:00 p.m. on Friday No. 11 UWSP will play No. 23 Elmhurst.
