Pointers Earn Split at St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team split a pair of non-conference games at St. Scholastica on Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game 3-1 in 10 innings before taking a 12-1 loss in the second game.

Turner Doornink (Clintonville, WI/Clintonville) hit a two-run home run in the top of the tenth inning to give the Pointers (16-14) a 3-1 win over the Saints (20-8). Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, IL/Boylan Catholic) got the inning started with a leadoff double, and after a Cody Hanke (Marathon, WI/Marathon) groundout, Doornink delivered the game-winning homer.

The Saints got the scoring started in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI double by Jake Kuschke before the Pointers answered in the top of the third on an RBI double by Ray Greco (Downers Grove, IL/North) to score Ben Gerber (Stoughton, WI/Stoughton).

Drew Spaeth (Stratford, WI/Stratford) pitched 3.1 innings in relief picking up his second win of the season, without allowing a hit and striking out one. Ben Servais (East Bethel, MN/St. Francis) got the start and finished with 6.2 innings pitched, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts.

Seven different Pointers collected hits in the win, including two by Hanke. Austin Colvard led the Saints with two hits.

The win by the Pointers snapped St. Scholastica's 52-game home winning streak.

St. Scholastica 12 UW 1  (7 inn.)

In game two, the Saints scored 10 runs in the sixth inning to break open a 2-1 game and beat the Pointers 12-1 in seven innings.

Austin Colvard led the Saints going 2-4 with four RBIs, while Al Marolt was also 2-4 with three RBIs. Chris Olson and Trevor Bernsdorf also had two RBIs each for the Saints. Jacob Dzubay picked up the win on the mound, pitching 4.2 innings with two strikeouts.

Parker Sadowski (Beaver Dam, WI/Beaver Dam) drove in the only run for the Pointers, going 1-3 with an RBI. Chris Hetzel (Oshkosh, WI/Lourdes)  took the loss, allowing two runs with four strikeouts over 3.1 innings.

The Pointers return to the field on Saturday and Sunday, April 30-May 1, when they play doubleheaders at UW-Oshkosh. Games are scheduled for 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. each day.
