EAU CLAIRE, Wis. - The UW-Stevens Point softball team took to the road against UW-Eau Claire dropping both games 9-1 (5 innings) and 5-2 for a pair of WIAC games this afternoon at Gelein Field.
UW-Eau Claire 9 UW-Stevens Point 1 (5 innings)
Game one opened with the Blugolds (17-10-1, 6-1-1) getting two quick outs but the Pointers (8-19, 1-7) got the afternoon base running started with an up the middle single by Freshman
Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port). After a walk and a hit batter Freshman
Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) drove in one on an error by the short stop scoring the first run of the afternoon. The Blugolds bounced back quickly with a leadoff triple and grinded out four first inning runs to start the game.
The second inning went scoreless for both teams. To start the third the Pointers Uhlenbrauck took a walk and stole second to get a runner in scoring position but the Pointers couldn't capitalize and the Blugolds scored in consecutive innings to take the 9-1 win.
Maddie Durie (Appleton, WI/East) took the loss for the Pointers pitching 3.1 innings.
UW-Eau Claire 5 UW-Stevens Point 2
In game two the Pointers gave up single runs in each of the first two innings before defensively clamping down and holding the Blugolds scoreless through the fourth. The Pointers got the bats going in the top of the fifth with Sophomore
Averi Kanyuh (Rapid River, WI/Rapid River) leading off with a single.
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, WI/Kaukauna) then laid a sacrifice bunt to advance Kanyuh to second.
Charlotte Pegram (Fond du Lac, WI/Oakfield) drove in Kanyuh for the RBI while earning a trip to second base. The Pointers scored their second run of the inning on a short stop error scoring Pegram before ending the inning when
Bailie Sheahan (Salem, WI/Wilmot Union) got caught stealing second.
The Blugolds would follow up in the fifth with a run of their own before tacking on two more in the sixth for the final score of 5-2.
Amelia Heup (Milwaukee, WI/Lutheran) took the loss on the mound for the Pointers in game two.
The Pointers will host a doubleheader with the Pioneers of UW-Platteville on Sunday at McCarty Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
