STEVENS POINT, Wis.— The UW-Stevens Point split a doubleheader with UW-River Falls, dropping the first game 9-8 in nine innings and winning 5-4 in walk off fashion in the second game at McCarty Memorial Field on Sunday afternoon.
UW-River Falls 9, UW-Stevens Point 8 (9 innings)
Michelle LaCasse went 2-4 hitting a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to lead the UW-River Falls (11-17-1) to a 9-8 victory over UW-Stevens Point (8-17) in the first game of the afternoon.
The Pointers struck first, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning after RBI hits by Justine Ertl (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls) and Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, WI/Kaukauna).
Maddy Bunnell got UWRF on the board in the second with an RBI double, before Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port) doubled in a pair in the bottom half of the inning to go up 5-1.
In the third, the Falcons tied the game getting an RBI from Ali Murray and Bunnell.
Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) drove in her 12th run of the season in the fourth inning to take back the lead.
Katie Thompson hit a 2 run home run in the seventh to give UWRF an 8-6 lead entering the bottom half.
The Pointers forced extra innings, getting an RBI triple from Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, WI/Kaukauna) and a sacrifice fly by Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London), before LaCasse homer in the ninth.
LaCasse pitched a complete game for UWRF picking up the win. Maddie Durie (Appleton, WI/East) pitched 5.1 innings for the Pointers, and Averi Kanyuh (Rapid River, WI/Rapid River) pitched 3.2 innings in relief.
UW-Stevens Point 5, UW-River Falls 4
Down 4-3 in the seventh inning, Bailie Sheahan (Salem, WI/Wilmot Union) hit a walk off home run over the left field fence to give the Pointers a 5-4 victory, forcing a split with UW-River Falls.
The Pointers took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning, after Uhlenbrauck had RBI hits in the first and third innings.
In the fourth, UW-River Falls took a 3-2 getting RBI from Bunnell and Abby Veloske.
Sheahan tied the game at three for UWSP in the fourth, hitting a RBI single, scoring Johnson.
Shannan Borchardt gave UWRF a 4-3 lead in the fifth with a single, before Sheahan home run in the seventh.
The Pointers will return to action on April 21, traveling to UW-Eau Claire for a double header. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
