DE PERE, Wis. - The UW-Stevens Point baseball team split a pair of games today against St. Norbert College winning 3-0 and falling 0-2 this Fri., April 1 at Van Alstine Field.
Pointers' Mark Kowalke (Baraboo, WI/Baraboo) (2-1) pitched a complete game shut out, firing seven scoreless innings, staggering five hits with three walks and two strikeouts for his second win of the season.
The Pointers (4-8) offense was highlighted behind Tyler Thomka (Muskego, WI/Muskego) who went 1-for-2, knocking in all three Pointers' runs.
In the second inning, Green Knights pitcher, Jake McMahon gave up a lead-off single to Pointers Ben Diedrich, and Diedrich moved to second base on Sawyer Schultz (Appleton, WI/North)'s sacrifice bunt. Diedrich then advanced to third base after a single from William Iloncaie (East Troy, WI/East Troy), and scored off of Thomka's sacrifice fly to right field to put the Pointers on the scoreboard first.
Both pitchers silenced the bats, respectively, until the Pointers extended their lead by adding two additional runs in the top of the fifth. With two runners in scoring position, Thomka came up clutch once again with a single that scored Schultz and Diedrich.
Kowalke shut the Green Knights out in the final two innings surrendering just one hit.
In game two, St. Norbert (4-6) scored a run in the bottom of the first and bottom of the fifth inning, which proved enough behind hurler Jason Malkowski who in return pitched a complete seven inning game, giving up four hits, three walks and struck out two.
The Green Knights took advantage of two Pointers miscues in the two innings they scored, leading to two unearned runs.
Thomka was the lone Pointers' hitter who had a multi-hit game, going two-for-three.
The Pointers return to action on Sun., April 3 as they travel to Ripon College for a double header. The first pitch is set for 12 p.m.
