Team effort lifts Pointers to NCAA opening round win over DePauw

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Nine different players scored, led by Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest)'s 12 point to give UW-Stevens Point women's basketball a 64-50 win over DePauw University (Ind.) in the opening round of the 2016 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Tournament.

The Pointers (21-7) advance to play George Fox (Ore.) (28-0), who won its opening round contest earlier in the evening 64-54 over St. Norbert Saturday, March 5 at 7 p.m.

The Pointers never trailed on the evening, opening the game on a JoAnn Wolfenberg layup and led by as many as eight, 15-7, in the opening quarter.

DePauw answered with an 8-0 run, tying the game just minutes into the second quarter.  Twice in the second the Pointers pushed their lead to seven, but both times the Tigers responded to keep UWSP close.

In the second half, UWSP pushed the lead to double digits twice, leading by 10, 36-26, with 4:27 to go in the quarter, but DePauw responded yet again with a run to pull to within one, 41-40.

In the fourth, the Pointers pulled in front yet again, and defensively held the Tigers to just 10 points in the final quarter to pull away for the 15-point victory.

Anklam added five assists and three steals to her team-high 12-point performance while Allie Miceli (Marseilles, IL/Ottawa Township) added 10 points on the evening. Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) pulled-down a team-best 11 rebounds, nine defensively,  and Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) chipped in with seven.

Maya Howard led the Tigers with 14 points off the bench, connecting on six of seven free throw attempts. As a team DePauw shot just 32.2 percent from the floor on the evening (19-59) and 18.2 percent from beyond the arc (2-11).
