Pointers push Bruins to final minute but fall in NCAA Second Round

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team took No. 2 George Fox down to the wire on Saturday night but the Bruins battled back from an early 11-point deficit to end the Pointers NCAA Tournament run with a 62-59 win in Berg Gym.

The host Pointers came out swinging in the game's opening quarter, opening the game on a 10-1 run. UWSP continued to battle, holding leads in the double-digits for much of the first 10 minutes.

In the second period, George Fox began to chip away at the Pointers lead, pulling within two, 29-27, at the halftime break.

The Bruins took their first lead of the game with 4:48 remaining in the third when Kaycee Creech knocked down a three-pointer from the wing, giving George Fox a 39-38 edge.

The Bruins continued their rush, extending their lead to nine, 50-41, by the quarter's end.

In the fourth, the Pointers erased a nine-point deficit to take a one point lead, 56-55, with 2:43 to go, but the Bruins battled back to tie and took a three-point lead on a three-pointer by Sammy Naluai with 1:37 left.

A Taylor Barrett (Monroe, WI/Monroe) lay-up with 11 seconds left pulled UWSP to within one, but a pair of free throws by Creech sealed the three-point victory.

JoAnn Wolfenberg led the Pointes with a double-double, posting 16 points and 10 rebounds in her final contest in the purple and gold. Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) chipped in with nine points and Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) collected nine rebounds.

Justine Benner led the Bruins with 16 points while Kim Frost chipped in with 11 and Creech added 10 off the bench.

The Burins forced 27 UWSP turnovers on the evening and connected on 11-of-14 free throw attempts in the victory.

The Pointers season comes to a close with an overall record of 21-8.
