CLERMONT, FL. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team pounded out 31 hits on the day defeating Loras College 8-4 and the University of Maine at Farmington 14-4 (5 innings) this Tuesday afternoon at Hancock Park.
In game one, the Pointers (6-8) fell behind early after Duhawks' Julie Kistner singled to right field, scoring two runs. The damage ended the next at-bat as Dani Stromert field out to center field.
In the top of the third inning, the Pointers responded with back-to-back singles from
Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) and
Charlotte Pegram (Fond du Lac, WI/Oakfield). After a sacrifice fly from
Paige Kitzing (Mount Pleasant, WI/J.J. Case), the Pointers cut the lead to one.
Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port) began the top of the fifth inning with a single to left field that led the Pointers to a four hit, three run inning. After a single and back-to-back walks, Pegram tied the game with a bases loaded walk. Kitzing platted two more runs for the Pointers scoring Uhlenbrauck and
Kylie Johnson (Iola, WI/Iola-Scandinavia).
Adding to their lead, the Pointers strung together four hits and four runs in the top of the sixth inning. Cooper led off with a double down the left field line and advanced to third base two batters later by a Uhlenbrauck single to up the middle. Kitzing earned her fourth RBI of the game, with a single to center field, knocking in Cooper. The Pointers took advantage of back-to-back errors on the Duhawks leading to two runs for a 4-2 Pointers advantage.
Loras (4-7) looked rally back scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Durie closed out any chance of a comeback to finish the inning with a pop out to the short stop.
Durie earned the win pitching 5.1 innings allowing six hits with two runs, two earned runs, three walks and two strikeouts.
With 14 hits in the game, the Pointers had four multiple hit hitters with Cooper leading the way going 3-for-4 in the game.
In game two, The Pointers platted 14 runs on 17 hits against Maine at Farmington (1-7) powering out two homeruns and nine double s in five innings of work.
The Pointers scored every inning including eight runs in the bottom of the third.
UWSP had five multiple hit players with Uhlenbrauck and
Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, WI/Whitnall) leading the way. Each hit their first home runs of the season.
Amelia Heup (Milwaukee, WI/Lutheran) earned the win pitching four innings, giving up six hits, three runs, three earned runs, two walks and three strikeouts.
The Pointers wrap up the trip with Elmhurst and Fontbonne Wed., March 23. The first pitch is slated for 9 a.m. ET.
