Softball Splits Final Two Games of Weekend

ROCHESTER, MN. – On day two of the Rochester Dome Tournament, the UW-Stevens Point softball team split a pair of games today defeating Martin Luther College 8-1 and fell to Gustavus Adolphus 9-1.

Martin Luther Box | Gustavus Box

In game one, Charlotte Pegram (Fond du Lac, WI/Oakfield) led off with a single, followed by a sacrifice bunt from Bailie Sheahan (Salem, WI/Wilmot Union). With an aggressive base running approach, Pegram went from first to third on the bunt, and scored on a throwing error on the second baseman trying to get Pegram out at third.

The Pointers (1-2) went scoreless in the second inning, but tacked onto their 1-0 lead adding two runs in the third after back-to-back doubles from Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) and Paige Kitzing (Mount Pleasant, WI/J.J. Case) for a 3-0 advantage over the Knights (0-2)

UW-Stevens Point scored two more runs in the fifth and three runs in the sixth inning. Martin Luther scored in the top of the sixth for their lone run.

Cassidy Winter (Westfield, WI/Westfield) earned the win pitching a six inning, three hit, four walk, and two hit by pitch stat line.

The Pointers had six players with a multi-hit game, totaling 16 hits in the game. Pegram and Allen led the Pointers going 3-for-4.

In game two, the Pointers (1-3) got on the scoreboard first in the second inning after a Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, WI/Kaukauna) single and Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port) single up the middle. Johnson advanced to second on a wild pitch, before Cooper singled up the middle scoring Johnson for the RBI.

Gustavus (1-0) tied the game the following inning due to a few Pointer miscues. Rachel Malo led off the inning with a hit by pitch and reached second on a passed ball. Malo reached third on the fielders choice from Durie to Jen Jacobson (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook), but crossed the plate because of errant throw from Durie.

The Gusties scored in the next four innings while the Pointers had just one hit for the remainder of the game while also committing four more errors to keep the game out of reach.

UW-Stevens Point returns to action March 12, traveling back to the Rochester Dome Stadium to take on Buena Vista for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
