ROCHESTER, Minn. – UW-Stevens Point opened the 2016 season on Saturday, dropping both games at the Rochester Dome Stadium, falling to St. Scholastica 7-0 and Carleton College 11-2 (5 inn.)

UWSP vs. CarletonIn game one against St. Scholastica, the Pointers and Saints played three scoreless innings until the Saints (1-0) broke open the game with six runs in the bottom of the fourth. Pointers starter
Maddie Durie (Appleton, WI/East) struck out Becca Zwak for the first out of the inning, but a single and a double later, the Saints scored first on a successful squeeze bunt. Scholastica would eventually score five more runs for a six run, six hit inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Saints tacked on another run to improve their lead over the Pointers and close out the game with a 7-0 victory.
The Pointers scattered just four hits with
Charlotte Pegram (Fond du Lac, WI/Oakfield),
Bailie Sheahan (Salem, WI/Wilmot Union),
Paige Kitzing (Mount Pleasant, WI/J.J. Case) and
Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port) each recording a hit.
In the second game, the Pointers fell behind early 2-0 to Carleton (1-0) in the top of the first, but retaliated back with two runs of their own. After a single from Sheahan and double from
Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin), Kitzing singled up the middle knocking in two runs.
Carleton continued their scoring rampage as they scored each inning, while scoring four runs in the third, and three runs in the fourth. The Pointers were unable to answer, leading to an 11-2 run rule defeat.
Allen and
Bailey Seubert (Marathon, WI/Marathon) both went 2-for-2 in the game.
The Pointers look to bounce back as they finish the weekend in Rochester against Martin Luther and Gustavus at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.
