SUPERIOR, Wis. –
Emily Lester (Eau Claire, WI/Memorial)'s power-play goal with 37 seconds remaining in the third period gave the UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team a 2-2 tie with UW-Superior in the team's final Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) game of the season on Saturday at Wessman Arena.
Box Score With time winding down, Lester scored on a 6-on-4 for UW-Stevens Point (14-7-3, 6-3-3 WIAC) after UW-Superior (9-9-5, 3-6-3 WIAC) took a roughing penalty with 1:05 to go and the Pointers pulled their goaltender.
Hailey Rock (Hammond, WI/Central) earned an assist on Lester's team-high 12th goal of the season after feeding the puck back to Lester following a blocked shot.
UW-Stevens Point outshot UW-Superior 4-0 in the overtime but neither team was able to find a game-winning goal. The Pointers had a 5-on-3 for the first 55 seconds of overtime.
The tie means the Pointers will be the second seed in the upcoming WIAC Championship and will host the third-seeded Yellowjackets on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 26-27 at Ice Hawks Arena.
Ali Biagini (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater) opened the scoring for UW-Stevens Point at 6:58 of the first period with an unassisted goal. The score remained 1-0 until Karen Larson scored on the power play at 5:45 of the second to bring the Yellowjackets even.
UW-Superior took a 2-1 lead early in the third when Lexie Weiss scored from Emily Heid and Larson at 6:10.
UW-Stevens Point outshot UW-Superior 35-26 in the game, including 11-7 in the third when the Pointers forced the game to overtime.
The two teams combined for 13 penalties in the game. The Pointers were 1-for-8 on the power play, while the Yellowjackets were 1-for-5.
UW-Stevens Point hosts Concordia (Wis.) on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 2:30 p.m. for Senior Day at Ice Hawks Arena to wrap up the regular season.
