SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team clinched home-ice advantage in the semifinals of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship behind goals from six different skaters in a 6-1 victory against UW-Superior on Friday evening at Wessman Arena.
Box Score UW-Stevens Point (14-7-2, 6-3-2 WIAC) and UW-Superior (9-9-4, 3-6-2 WIAC) were tied 1-1 after two periods but the Pointers blew the game open with a four-goal second period and added another in the third for their fourth consecutive victory. The Pointers needed one point from the weekend series to clinch at least the No. 2 seed in the WIAC Championship.
Shauna Bollinger (Menomonie, WI/Menomonie) broke the 1-1 deadlock after a period four minutes into the second period, scoring from
Emily Lester (Eau Claire, WI/Memorial) and
Ali Biagini (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater). Just 46 seconds later it was 3-1 after
Rachel Reynard (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) scored from
Meredith Ingbretson (Hayward, WI/Hayward) and
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Craig).
A goal from
Maddie Schlossmacher (Roseville, MN/Roseville), her second of the season, at 6:28 of the second extended UW-Stevens Point's lead to 4-1 and gave the Pointers three goals in 2:28. Lemirande and Lester added power-play goals late in the second and early in the third to conclude the scoring.
Ten different UW-Stevens Point players registered at least one point in the game.
Lauren Smith (Antigo, WI/Antigo) scored the opening goal of the game late in the first period before UW-Superior replied through Emily Heid less than three minutes later.
UW-Stevens Point's six goals were a season-high total for the team, which had scored five goals on four occasions this season. The Pointers outshot the Yellowjackets 41-25 in the game, including 20-5 in the decisive second period.
Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, MN/South St. Paul) made 11 of her 24 saves in the first period to improve to 8-4-2 on the season. Natasha Singer took the loss for UW-Superior despite saving 26 shots over two periods before Kim Kobar made nine saves in the third.
UW-Stevens Point is currently even with UW-River Falls in the WIAC standings with 14 points. The Falcons have two games remaining against UW-Eau Claire and do not conclude conference play until Saturday, Feb. 20.
The Pointers and Yellowjackets wrap up conference play on Saturday, Feb. 13 at 2 p.m. at Wessman Arena.
