Pointers Storm Back, Win Thriller in Overtime

PHOENIX, Ariz. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (8-3) overcame a 14-point first quarter deficit and defeated Kenyon College (8-4) in overtime by a 59-57 score on the final day of action at the Arizona Shootout on Friday.  After allowing 24 points in the first quarter, the UWSP defense held Kenyon to just 33 points over the final 35 minutes of play.

Junior Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) led the Pointers with 15 points.  Senior Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) had 12 points and nine rebounds to just miss a double-double.

Roland scored the first five points of the game for UWSP for an early 5-2 lead.  After a Hennes jumper at 6:11, the Pointers went cold netting just a Hennes free throw the remainder of the quarter to fall behind 24-10.

A three-pointer by Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) a little more than two minutes into the second quarter snapped the drought and began the comeback.  Hennes hit a jumper with 4:21 remaining in the first half to spark a 9-0 run and pull the Pointers within three.

Roland scored the first UWSP points of the second half two and a half minute in.  Later in the quarter, Anklam hit a jumper to knot the game at 36-36, but a pair of baskets by the Ladies saw the Pointers down five heading to the fourth quarter.

Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) hit a three early in the fourth quarter to help UWSP pull even again.  Then with a minute remaining, Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) buried a three to give the Pointers a 52-50 lead, but a Kenyon basket tied the game and sent it to overtime.

Anklam scored the lone basket from the field in the extra session to push the Pointers in front by four.  Down the stretch, Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) hit a pair of free throws to keep the two-possession lead as UWSP prevailed.

The Pointers travel to Oshkosh on Wednesday to open WIAC play against the Titans.  UWSP will return home on Saturday, Jan. 7 for a 3:00 p.m. tilt with UW-La Crosse.
