Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Pointers Run Out of Steam in Conference Opener at UWO

OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (8-4, 0-1) built a 12-point lead early in the second quarter, but could not stave off the charge from No. 13 UW-Oshkosh (11-1, 1-0) in a 62-53 loss to open conference play on Wednesday.

Senior Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) led the Pointers with 14 points.  Fellow senior Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) and junior Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) also scored in double figures with 10 points apiece.  Roland led UWSP with 8 boards in the game.

Senior Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) nailed a three to open the scoring as the Pointers raced out to a 9-2 advantage early.  Fellow senior Sarah Gamillo (Colby, WI/Colby) added a bucket to spark a 6-0 run to end the quarter with junior Taylor Barrett (Monroe, WI/Monroe) scoring the final four points.

A minute into the second quarter, Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) hit from deep to give UWSP its largest lead at 12 points.  Hennes drained a jumper with 4:43 left in the first half to snap an 8-1 run by the Titans.  Barrett and Hennes scored the final four points of the half as UWSP held a five-point edge at the half.

Hennes and Anklam combined for five early points, but a two-and-a-half-minute drought allowed UWO to close within one.   Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) hit a three with 2:56 remaining in the third quarter, but UWSP was held scoreless the rest of the period clinging to a two-point lead heading to the fourth.

Hennes ended the six-minute dry spell by the Pointers to pull UWSP within one.  A 7-0 run by the Titans put UWSP in an eight-point hole until a Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) basket with 1:20 ended another drought from the field.  Anklam buried a three in the final half minute to cut the deficit to three, but UWO went 6-for-6 from the line to close out the win.

The Pointers return home to face UW-La Crosse on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.  UWSP will be home for four of the next six games in conference play.
