HOLLAND, Mich. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team improved to 7-1 on the year with a 76-66 win over Rochester College (6-8) to open the Hope Post Exam Jam on Friday.
Junior
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, WI/Monroe) led the Pointers with 20 points, her second-consecutive 20-point game. Senior
Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) scored 16 points and junior
Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) added a career-high 13 points off the bench. Hennes led UWSP with seven rebounds. Mix and
Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) grabbed six boards each.
Midway through the first quarter, senior
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) hit her first basket of the game to give UWSP a three-point lead, the largest of the quarter. Mix put in a layup in the final minute of the period to stop a 4-0 run by the Warriors and bring the Pointers within three points.
Hennes scored four early points in the second quarter, but Rochester College opened the period on a 12-6 run to build an eight-point lead.
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, WI/De Pere) hit a three to snap a three-minute drought by the UWSP offense and spark a 14-6 run to end the half.
Anklam and
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) each buried a three near the midpoint of the third quarter to push the Pointers' advantage to 12 points.
Made jumpers by Hennes and Barrett began the fourth quarter which saw UWSP hit nine free throws and extend the lead to 16 while the Warriors went through a three-minute dry spell.
The Pointers will face host No. 7 Hope College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CT to conclude play at the Hope Post Exam Jam. UWSP will head to Phoenix, Ariz., for the Arizona Shootout on Dec. 29 and 30.
