STEVENS POINT, Wis. - The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team tied the game mid-way through the third period, but were unable to finish the comeback as Saint Mary's University came away with the 3-1 victory this Saturday evening at Ice Hawks Arena.
Trailing by just a goal, Pointers'
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Craig) tied the game mid-way through the third period, but Ashley Cocoran held the Pointers in check saving 37-of-38 shots for the Cardinals (4-6-1) for the win.
Saint Mary's tipped on past Pointers' goal tender,
Lisa Fowle (Wausau, WI/Wausau West), for an early first period goal at 2:19. The rest of the period remained quiet as the Pointers got off six shots on goal while Saint Mary's just two total shots on goal.
The Pointers had plenty of opportunities the next two periods challenging Cocoran for a total of 32 shots combined in the second and third periods. Cocoran stifled the Pointers however, allowing the Lemirande power play goal midway through the third period. Lemirande's scored her seventh goal of the season and tied the game 1-1.
With 4:22 left in regulation, too many players on the ice turned into a Cardinal power play opportunity and while the Pointers killed the power play, a second into full strength, the Cardinals found the back of the net at the 17:39 minute mark.Â
In the final minutes of the game, the Pointers pulled Fowle for the person advantage, but fell victim to an empty net goal falling behind 3-1.
The Pointers look to get back on track as they host St. Thomas University for a two-game series starting Saturday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
