ST. PETER, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team rallied for three goals in the third period to earn a 3-2 victory over Gustavus Adolphus this Tuesday, Nov. 8 evening in St. Peter, Minn. at the Don Roberts Ice Rink.
Coming off a two-goal performance last Saturday,
Ali Biagini (Stillwater, MN/Stillwater) tallied two more goals for the Pointers (2-2-1) leading the team to a win over the Gusties (1-1-0). All scoring came in the third period for the Pointers and none more important than
Lauren Smith (Antigo, WI/Antigo)'s goal for the game winner in the last two minutes of the game.
After a scoreless first period, the Pointers fell victim to two power play goals from the Gusties in the second period. At 11:58, Allison Karmann was called for interference and in just under a minute of the power play, Gustie Kaitlyn Klein beat Pointers'
Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, MN/South St. Paul) for a 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, after an
Alex Grubbs (Minong, WI/Spooner) tripping penalty, the Gusties found the back of the net at the 15:35 minute mark for a two-goal lead.
The Pointers were doubled up in shots (15-35) for the game, but made the shots count when needed in the third period. At 2:26, Biagini, assisted by
Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Craig), scored one of two goals to cut the Gustie lead in half.
Nearing the end of the game, Biagini and company rallied for another goal at the 17:34 mark to tie the game, 2-2. Just 26 seconds later, the Pointers turned a potential game-ending tie into a victory as
Lauren Smith (Antigo, WI/Antigo), assisted by Lemirande, scored the game winner at 17:50.
The Pointers didn't make the last 1:10 easy as
Meredith Ingbretson (Hayward, WI/Hayward) committed a holding penalty, but UWSP held on as Conley saved three shots to hang on for the win.
UWSP is back in action on Friday, Nov. 11 for their home opener against WIAC conference rival, UW-River Falls. The Pointers and Falcons will face off at 7 p.m. at Ice Hawks Arena.
