STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (3-2) picked up its third-straight win shooting a season-best 54 percent from the field in an 85-65 victory over visiting UW-Superior (1-4) on Tuesday night. It was UWSP's 28th-straight win over the Yellowjackets dating back to 2004.
Sophomore
Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) led the Pointers with 17 points, while senior
Bryce Williams (Maple Grove, Minn./Spring Lake Park) and fellow sophomore
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) also poured in double-digits with 15 and 12, respectively.
Another sophomore,
Brett Tauber (Madison, Wis./Memorial), led UWSP with seven rebounds, three on the offensive end. He also had nine points in the game.
Tauber completed an and-one just over two minutes into the game to erase the early 2-0 deficit for the Pointers. Later in the half, Tauber extended the lead to 9-6 with a layup. Williams buried a three seconds later and the Pointers never looked back.
With just under nine minutes remaining in the first half, junior
Luke Zuiker (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) hit from behind the arc to up the advantage to 21-10. A minute later, Zuiker finished the and-one to push the lead to 12. Williams completed and and-one and Bublitz hit a pair of free throws as UWSP built a 19-point lead with just under four remaining in the half. But UW-Superior ended the half on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 10 at the break.
Tauber and Nelson combined for a 5-0 spurt to open the second half. The Yellowjackets answered back with a 7-0 streak to pare the lead back to eight. Bublitz outscored UWS 8-2 over a minute and a half stretch as the Pointers went ahead 53-37.
Nelson hit a pair of buckets in an 8-2 run as the Pointers lead grew to 18 with nine and a half remaining. Bublitz and Williams hit threes as the lead ballooned to 20 and the Yellowjackets only got as close as 18 the remainder of the game.
The Pointers will return to action on Dec. 10 at Hope College before a trip to St. Thomas to face the defending national champions on Dec. 14. UWSP returns home for a four-game home stand beginning on Dec. 22 against Edgewood.
