Nelson’s Bucket in Final Seconds Pushes UWSP Past Hope

HOLLAND, Mich. – Sophomore Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) hit a shot with just four seconds remaining to give visiting UW-Stevens Point (4-2) a 74-72 win at No. 12 Hope College (5-2) on Saturday night.  The win extends the Pointers' winning streak to four-straight.

Fellow sophomore Ethan Bublitz (Jackson, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) scored a career-high 24 points to lead all players in scoring.  Junior MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) added 19 points, his first double-figure game as a Pointer.  Nelson poured in 17 as UWSP had three players with 17 or more points.

Nelson pulled down a team-high seven rebounds, including a clutch defensive board in the final minute with UWSP up by one.  Senior Bryce Williams (Maple Grove, Minn./Spring Lake Park) both free throws to up the Pointers' advantage to three with just 17 seconds left in the game.  The Flying Dutchmen hit a three seconds later to tie the game at 72-72 before Nelson's bucket.

The Pointers fell into an early 6-0 hole after the hosts hit back-to-back threes to open the game.  Delmore and Nelson combined for nine early points as UWSP inched ahead 9-8 just over four minutes into the game.

Nelson and Delmore hit three threes in an 11-point run nearing the midway point of the first half to put UWSP up 20-10.  Hope reciprocated with an 8-0 run to close within two.  The score remained close the remainder of the half, but the Pointers got a three from Bublitz and a Delmore layup in the final seconds to take a 36-34 lead into the break.

The teams traded buckets early in the second half before back-to-back baskets by Bublitz and a pair of free throws pushed the Pointers out in front by seven.  After a Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) three put UWSP up 53-46, the Flying Dutchmen scored six-straight points to again close within one.

Bublitz scored 10 points over the final 9:37 of the game as the Pointers trailed for only one possession down the stretch before Nelson's late bucket sealed the win.

UWSP heads to St. Paul, Minn., on Wednesday to face defending national champion St. Thomas.  Tipoff against the Tommies is slated for 7:00 p.m.
