ST. PAUL, Minn. – The No. 22 UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (4-1) trailed early and were unable to overcome the No. 6 St. Thomas Tommies (3-0) in a 76-65 defeat in Minnesota on Sunday.
Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) had a team-high 20 points for the Pointers. She was 6-for-6 at the line and 7-for-8 from the field. She also grabbed a team-leading seven boards and had one of UWSP's three blocks.
Seniors
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) and
Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) scored the first seven points for UWSP to pull within 8-7 near the midway point of the first quarter. Fellow senior
Sarah Gamillo (Colby, WI/Colby) hit a three and
Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) put in a layup, but UWSP didn't score in the final two minutes and trailed by eight after the first quarter.
Hennes and
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, WI/De Pere) combined for the Pointers' first five points of the second stanza. But a four minute drought from the field helped host UST build a 14-point advantage. Gamillo and Hennes scored eight-straight for UWSP before Cerrato scored in the final seconds to send the game to break with the Pointers behind by 10.
Four different Pointers scored over the first half of the third quarter to cut the deficit to four. After Anklam hit her second three of the quarter, it was Douglas who scored the final four points to send the game to the fourth with UWSP trailing by just three.
St. Thomas opened the fourth with a 7-0 run to push the lead back to 10. Hennes scored four-straight points for UWSP to get back within six, but the Tommies upped the lead to nine with just 2:43 remaining. An Anklam three in the final minute closed the gap to six, but UST hit five of six free throws down the stretch to pull away.
The Pointers return to Berg Gym on Wednesday (Nov. 30) for a 7:00 p.m. battle with Carthage. Fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for donation to The Cupboard.
