PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The No. 22 UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team prevailed in a defensive battle at Lakeland on Tuesday night winning 40-36 to remain unbeaten on the young season. The Pointers (4-0) had three players, senior
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest), junior
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) and freshman
Bre Richter (Rosholt, WI/Rosholt HS), all score a team-high seven points.
Senior
Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) had a season-high eight rebounds to lead UWSP. Sophomore
Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) scored six points and the Pointers' bench out-scored the Muskies' bench 23-16.
Mid way through the first quarter,
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) scored a layup off a Lakeland turnover, two of UWSP's 14 points off of turnovers in the game. In the closing seconds of the quarter, senior
Sarah Gamillo (Colby, WI/Colby) hit a three to tie the game at 10-10.
That three by Gamillo sparked an 11-0 run by the Pointers to put UWSP up 18-10. The UWSP defense held Lakeland without a point for more than seven minutes to begin the period, but the Muskies turned the tides and put up a 10-0 run to end the half and take a one-point lead into the break.
The Muskies kept the momentum early in the third with five-straight points before a layup by Mix snapped the drought a little more than three minutes in. Later in the quarter, a
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) three put the Pointers ahead 29-27 and UWSP never trailed after that.
With 1:36 remaining in the game and a one-point UWSP lead,
Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) buried a three to give the Pointers a 37-33 edge. Anklam hit three free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
UWSP will travel to No. 6 St. Thomas on Sunday for a 2:00 p.m. tip versus the Tommies. The Pointers reurn home on Nov. 30 against Carthage at 7:00 p.m. For the game against the Lady Reds, fans are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for donation to The Cupboard.
