Women’s Basketball Rallies for Nail-Biting Victory

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) hit two free throws with three seconds left to seal a come-from-behind win for the No. 22 UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (3-0) over visiting Illinois Wesleyan (1-1).  The Pointers overcame a seven-point first half deficit and trailed most of the game before prevailing with a 62-58 win in the finale of the Pointers Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Hennes had a career-high 27 points to lead all players, including 15 second-half points.  She was 6-for-6 from the line and 3-for-6 from behind the arc.  Fellow senior Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) added 10 points.

With the game tied at 58-58 and 12 seconds remaining, junior Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) hit the first of two free throws to give UWSP the lead late.  Anklam created a turnover and was fouled with five seconds remaining and hit the second free throw to push the lead to two.  On the ensuing in-bounds play, IWU threw the ball away to give UWSP the ball back.  Hennes was fouled immediately and nailed both free throws to seal the win.

Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) hit a three and Hennes scored five-straight points as the Pointers opened an 8-2 edge early.  But the Titans ended the first quarter on an 11-2 run to take a five-point lead into the second quarter.

Hennes and Anklam combined for nine early points as UWSP took a brief 22-20 lead.  After a bucket by Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) at the 5:25 mark of the second quarter, the Pointers went dormant for the remainder of the half as the Titans built a six-point edge at the half.

The combination of Anklam and Hennes against scored nine early points in the third quarter as the Pointers inched ahead 33-32 three minutes in.  Hennes and Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) erased a five-point flurry by the Titans to knot the game at 37 midway through the quarter.  Again, IWU went on a run, this time an 8-3 spurt to lead by five heading to the final period.

Douglas had back-to-back baskets for UWSP to open the fourth.  Then with three minutes left, Hennes buried her third three-pointer of the game to draw the Pointers within one.  As the game entered the final minute, Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) hit from long range to give UWSP a two-point lead.  IWU tied the game with 36 seconds left and the Pointers hit free throws down the stretch to pull out the win.

Hennes was named the Pointers Tip-Off Tournament Most Outstanding Player after scoring 43 points on the weekend.  She joined Anklam on the All-Tournament team.
