Men's Hockey Remains Unbeaten with 6-3 Win at Marian

FOND DU LAC, Wis.— Senior defenseman Trace Stahle scored a pair of goals in the third period to lead the top-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team to a 6-3 victory over Marian Friday evening at the Blue Line Family Ice Center.

Just 1:10 into the third period, Strahle netted his first goal of the night off assists by Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) and Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK) to give the UW-Stevens Point (6-0-1) a 5-1 lead over Marian (1-6-0) early in the third period.

At the 6:41 mark of the final frame, Clay Cross scored for the Sabres to cut into the Pointers lead.

With time running down in the third period, Strahle scored an empty net goal while playing shorthanded to extend the UWSP lead.

With just 1:14 remaining the game, Gianni Mangone scored for the Sabres to make it a 6-3 game.

The Pointers jumped out to a 1-0 lead off a goal from Stephan Beauvais (Shelby Township, MI) 6:10 into the opening frame off assists by Kelly O'Brien (Detroit, MI) and Jono Davis (La Verne, CA).

Midway through the opening period, Willem Nong-Lambert (Des Moines, Iowa ) scored an unassisted goal to put the Pointers up 2-0 heading into the second period.

In the second period, Omar Mullan (Dearborn, MI) and Sharkey scored back-to-back goals in the span of 1:22 to put the Pointers up 4-0 midway through the second period.

At the 17:59 mark of the second period, Derek Thorogood scored for Marian to cut the lead to 4-1, before the third period goal flurry.

The Sabres outshot UW-Stevens Point 27-25. Junior goaltender Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) made 24 saves for UWSP, while Mike Gudmandson made 19 for Marian.

UWSP returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 19) travelling to St. Norbert for a rematch of the 2016 NCAA Championship game. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Community Center.
