MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Three UW-Stevens Point seniors racked up double-digit points as the Pointers (1-0) rolled to a 64-42 win at Alverno (0-1) to open the season on Tuesday night.
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) had a game-high 16 points to lead the Pointers. Fellow seniors
Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) and
Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) added 14 and 11 points, respectively.
Hennes hit six of nine field goal attempts for UWSP as the Pointers shot 54 percent for the game. Meanwhile the UWSP defense held the Inferno to just 24.5 percent shooting. The Pointers also owned the paint, out-scoring Alverno, 28-10 down low.
Douglas hit four-straight free throws and Anklam had back-to-back buckets as the Pointers built an 8-3 lead midway through the first quarter. After the Inferno tied the game at eight, junior
Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) scored four-straight points to give UWSP a one-point edge to end the quarter.
Hennes scored six-consecutive points for UWSP to open the second quarter and build the lead to seven points less than four minutes in. Sophomore
Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) added a pair of bucket as the Pointers led by six at the break.
The Pointers scored the first five points of the second half holding Alverno scoreless over the first four minutes of the third quarter. A pair of three-pointers by Anklam later in the quarter built the UWSP lead to double digits.
UWSP began the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run as the lead grew to 14. Back-to-back baskets by junior
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, WI/Monroe) and the first collegiate points by freshman
Bre Richter (Rosholt, WI/Rosholt HS) gave the Pointers an 18-point lead midway through the fourth. The Pointers held the Inferno scoreless from the field over the final four minutes of play for the win.
The Pointers return to Berg Gym on Friday to open play in the Pointers Tip-Off Tournament at 6:00 p.m. versus Luther College. UWSP will face Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. to cap the weekend tournament.
