NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team surged for a 5-2 victory over St. Olaf, this Sat., October 29 at Northfield Ice Arena.
After being shut out Friday (Oct. 28) night, the Pointers (1-1) refused to be shut out again scoring in each period of the game. The Oles (1-1) committed just five penalties, but the Pointes took advantage of the person scoring twice during the person advantage.
UWSP took advantage of an early Ole cross-checking penalty in the first period to gain an early 1-0 lead. Cara Lemirande (Janesville, WI/Craig), assisted by Ellie Punnett (Hailey, ID/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) and Lexi England, with three seconds remaining in the power play. Pointer goaltender, Lisa Fowle (Wausau, WI/Wausau West) was challenged with eight shots from the Oles, and stopped all eight.
In the second period, freshmen Allison Karmann and Maddie Monroe (Aurora, IL/Batavia ) scored their first collegiate goal at the 2:55 and 11:15 minute marks to help give the Pointers a commanding 3-0 lead. Ole, Megan Skelly cut the lead to two goals, scoring near the end of the second period at 15:18.
The Pointers went two-for-six in power plays, scoring their second power play goal at the 5:50 minute mark of the third period. Punnett scored unassisted.
St. Olaf found the back of the net half way through the third period, but any sense of a comeback was denied after Meredith Ingbretson (Hayward, WI/Hayward) scored, short handed, with less than two minutes to go in the game. St. Olaf pulled their goalie the last 25 seconds of the game, but the Pointers prevailed to a 5-2 victory.
UWSP is back in Minnesota for a two-game series against Concordia College starting Fri. November 4 at 5 p.m. Game two of the series is set for 1 p.m. at Moorehead Sports Center Hockey Arena, Sat., November 5.
