NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The UW-Stevens Point women's hockey team opened the 2016-17 season with a 2-0 loss to St. Olaf this Friday evening, Oct. 28, at Northfield Ice Arena.
Despite outshooting the Ole's 28-18, the Pointers were unable to find the back of the net. Captains Ellie Punnet and Meredith Ingbretson (Hayward, WI/Hayward) led the Pointers with six and five shots, respectively.
After a 0-0 score at the end of the first period, the Ole's snuck onto the scoreboard near the end of the second period at the 16:56 minute mark. Bridget Rochel, assisted by Hannah Forliti got one past Pointers' goaltender Sydney Conley (South St. Paul, MN/South St. Paul) for the 1-0 advantage.
Looking to tie the game, UWSP pulled Conley in the last 1:30 of the game, but it was the Ole's who scored on the empty net at 19:20 to solidify a 2-0 victory.
The Pointers got off 11 shots in the third and final period, but were unable to get anything pass Ole's goaltender, Cassie Alexander.
UWSP resumes play tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 28 with St. Olaf for a 2:30 p.m. start time.
