WHITEWATER, Wis. – Sophomore
Darin Ward (Fond du Lac, WI/St. Mary's Springs) set a new school record in the 60-meter hurdles as the No. 11 UW-Stevens Point men's indoor track & field team finished fourth at the 10-team Leonard "Squig" Converse Invitational on Friday.
Results In his first meet with the Pointers, Ward won the event in 8.27 seconds after qualifying second in the preliminaries with a time of 8.43 seconds. The sophomore entered the event ranked 10th in the country in the event and his time of 8.27 seconds is tied for the ninth-fastest time in the country this season.
Jordan Richards (Stevens Point, WI/SPASH) took home the long jump title, jumping 7.21 meters (23' 8"). He won the only competitor to jump over seven meters at the meet. Richards was ranked No. 13 in the country in the long jump this week and posted the second-best long jump in the country to date this season at the meet.
Neil Pedersen (Clarendon Hills, IL/Hinsdale Central) won the one mile run with a time of 4:14.28, which is the seventh-fastest time in the country this season.
Outside of the three event wins, UW-Stevens Point had third-place finishes from
Luke Johnston (Mokena, IL/Lincoln-Way East) in the 5,000-meter run (15:47.30),
Alec Dix (WIld Rose, WI/Wild Rose) in the long jump (6.84m, 22' 5.25") and
Brent Reierson (Watertown, WI/Watertown) in the weight throw (16.20m, 53' 1.75").
As a team, the Pointers finished fourth with a total of 81 points. Augustana (Ill.) won the event with 108.50, followed by host UW-Whitewater with 96.50 and UW-La Crosse with 91.
UW-Stevens Point returns home for the Pointer Invite on Saturday, Feb. 6 beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the Multi-Activity Center.
