EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – Patrick Moore completed his hat trick with 56 seconds remaining in overtime to lift No. 7/10 UW-Eau Claire to a 5-4 win over the No. 3/4 UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team on Friday night at Hobbs Arena.
Box Score Moore's goal was assisted by Adam Knochenmus and came after
Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas)'s second goal of the game sent the game to the extra session. UW-Eau Claire (11-5-2, 1-2-0 WIAC) had led by scores of 2-0 and 4-3, while UW-Stevens Point (12-3-1, 1-1-0 WIAC) held a 3-2 lead at one stage.
With the Blugolds ahead 4-3, Sharkey scored at 2:31 of the third period on a five-minute power-play for UW-Stevens Point, which eventually sent the game to overtime.
Joe Kalisz (Davison, MI/Davison) earned one of his three assists on the goal and
Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) also helped set up the game-tying goal.
UW-Eau Claire jumped out to a 1-0 lead heading into the second period after Moore scored with three seconds remaining in the first period. Jake Hopfner increased the Blugolds' lead to 2-0, scoring 2:27 into the second frame.
UW-Stevens Point rallied with three unanswered goals in a 4:32 stretch of a six-goal second period.
Jono Davis (La Verne, CA) got the Pointers on the board at 9:24 from Kalisz and
Eliot Grauer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) before Sharkey netted his first of the night on the power play from Kalisz 1:23 later.
Trace Strahle (Anchorage, AK/Robert Service) completed the comeback with his second of the season from Sharkey at 13:56 of the second to give the Pointers a brief 3-2 lead. The Blugolds responded with goals by Bryan Sinz and Moore in the final four minutes of the second to put the hosts back ahead 4-3.
Both teams converted twice on the power play in the game with UW-Stevens Point going 2-for-4 and UW-Eau Claire's second-ranked power play going 2-for-2.
The Pointers outshot the Blugolds 42-35 in the game.
Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) made 30 saves for UWSP, while Tyler Green made 38 for UWEC.
UW-Stevens Point will return home on Saturday, Jan. 23 for a 7 p.m. game against No. 11/13 UW-River Falls at K.B. Willett Arena on the final night of the Kreuger's Harmony Beach Resort auction.
